Personal branding on film with Portland artist Mystery Glass

Personal branding photoshoot on 35mm film for Portland stained glass artist Mystery Glass.

I've followed Madi's Mystery Glass page on Instagram for as long as I've lived in Portland. I've always loved her stained glass pieces and the mystical themes she explores in her art. So I was so excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with Madi on a personal branding and product photoshoot last fall. Madi's home was so lovely with her stained glass pieces and a ton of vintage decor throughout the space. It was important to Madi to have some of her personal branding photos be shot on film. As a film photographer herself, and someone who's inspired by vintage fashion and mediums, it made sense for her Mystery Glass brand to be captured on a film format as well.

The shoot was a mix of personal branding portraiture and product photography. We played around with several different locations and lighting setups. I brought my small external lights to help showcase her art pieces. The results were a mix of editorial style portraits and vintage-inspired product shots on film.

We have plans to do a follow-up shoot in the fall to capture more in the Mystery Glass studio and more behind the scenes photos of Madi's creative process.

Interested in scheduling your own personal branding photoshoot on film?

In an era dominated by digital technology, where selfies and smartphone snapshots are the norm, the resurgent appeal of 35mm film has captured the hearts of photographers and individuals seeking to create authentic personal branding photos. As we navigate an ever-evolving digital landscape, there is a growing desire for genuine, tangible, and nostalgic experiences. In this blog, we explore why choosing 35mm film for your personal branding photos can be a transformative and inspired decision.

Timeless Aesthetics: There's an undeniable magic in the look of 35mm film that digital images often struggle to replicate. The warmth, grain, and color rendition of film create a timeless quality that endows your personal branding photos with a unique charm. This aesthetic is inherently different from the crisp and clean digital shots, making it stand out and evoke a sense of nostalgia that resonates with viewers.

Artistic Expression: Photographers shooting with 35mm film often take a more deliberate approach to their craft. The limitations of film, such as a finite number of exposures and no instant previews, encourage photographers to be more intentional with each shot. This thoughtful process allows for a deeper connection with the subject and lends an artistic touch to the images, elevating the overall quality of your personal branding photos.

Distinctive Identity: In a world saturated with digital images, embracing film photography sets you apart from the crowd. The inherent imperfections and idiosyncrasies of film contribute to the creation of a distinctive visual identity that reflects your personality and values. These unique qualities can serve as powerful tools in establishing a personal brand that leaves a lasting impression.

Focus on Quality: Shooting with 35mm film encourages a focus on quality over quantity. Each frame becomes precious, urging photographers and subjects to invest time and effort into achieving the perfect shot. This approach often leads to a more selective editing process, ensuring that only the most compelling and authentic images make the cut.

Disconnect to Reconnect: In today's fast-paced digital world, it's easy to get lost in the constant stream of notifications and distractions. Opting for film photography allows you to disconnect from screens and immerse yourself fully in the photoshoot experience. This intentional disconnection can foster a deeper connection with your photographer, leading to more candid and genuine expressions that will shine through in your personal branding photos.

Embracing 35mm film for your personal branding photos offers a journey of nostalgic artistic expression, and an opportunity to create something genuinely exceptional. The allure of film lies in its ability to evoke emotion, capture timeless aesthetics, and stand out in a world inundated with digital imagery. So, if you are seeking authenticity, artistic flair, and a unique visual identity, consider the charm and allure of 35mm film photography for your personal brand or small business.
