A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of photographing Whitney and Torrin tie the knot at Mosier Company in Hood River, about an hour outside of Portland. They kicked off the celebration at a house overlooking Hood River, with all their friends and family gathered to get ready to together, exchange toasts, and take group photos. The couple decided to forego a first look in lieu of spending more time with family and friends in the gorgeous home where everyone gathered before the ceremony.
Whitney and Torrin specifically reached out to me because they wanted to focus more on the candids, the authentic moments between family and friends, and less on the overly staged traditional wedding shots. If you're looking for a little guidance on the must-have wedding photos (plus the ones you can skip), I've got you.
Unless a first look is an absolute must for your wedding dreams, I often recommend skipping it for more time with loved ones or alternative activities that require less logistical planning and stress the day of.
After everyone was ready and the group photos were taken, the party headed out to Mosier Company for the ceremony and reception. It was a perfect venue for a large wedding party with tons of seating across multiple spaces and two bars on opposite sides of the space. I loved all the different seating areas, with grassy sections that were great for kids, and indoor seating by the bar for older guests and anyone wanting to escape the sun. The patio was also cooled down with giant misters.
The MoCo venue also features a small stage at the center of the patio which is perfect for couples exchanging vows in front of tables of family and friends. The local band Louder than Brad was ready to take the stage after the ceremony. The wedding party and guests took to the dance floor for the rest of the night to their favorite songs performed by the band.
I love it when couples reach out to me specifically looking for candid wedding photos on film. As a former photojournalism major, I shoot weddings through the lens of a journalist capturing any major event or breaking news story.
Your wedding photos should tell a story, which is best done through the candids.
Whitney and Torrin requested a mix of digital and 35mm film photos for their wedding photo package. I always encourage couples to add film to their wedding galleries - it's the medium I started on with photography and it's my favorite to shoot with to this day.
I also offer hybrid packages of film and digital, as well as engagement photography packages on film. These engagement shoots are a great way for couples to capture their love in an authentic and natural way before the chaos of their wedding day. I love capturing couples in their homes, or locations that mean a lot to your relationship.
